If you have stood at the front desk trying to decide between gel, dip powder, and acrylic, you are not alone. All three enhancements can give you longer-lasting color and stronger nails than a regular polish, but they behave differently on the nail, wear differently over time, and suit different lifestyles. Here is how we break it down for clients at Hollywoodnails.
Gel Polish
Gel polish is applied like regular polish and cured under a UV or LED lamp between coats. It stays glossy and chip-resistant for about two to three weeks. Our Gel Manicure uses a Luminary base for extra shine and durability. Because gel is thinner than acrylic or dip, it will not add much length or strength. It is best for clients who like their natural nail shape but want color that lasts longer than regular polish.
Dip Powder
Dip powder builds color and strength by dipping the nail into finely milled powder, layer by layer, then sealing it with a top coat. No UV lamp is required. It tends to be more durable than gel and holds up well for clients who use their hands a lot during the day.
A note from our nail techs: we offer dip powder, but we ask clients to get educated on the process first. Removal requires soaking the powder off, which takes a bit longer than a standard polish change. We value the integrity of your nails and want you to know exactly what you are choosing before your appointment.
Acrylic
Acrylic is a powder-and-liquid mix applied over the natural nail or a tip, then shaped and buffed once it hardens. It is the strongest option for adding length and is a good fit if you want a dramatic shape change, like a longer coffin or almond nail. Acrylic fills are typically needed every two to three weeks as your natural nail grows out.
We also offer pink & white sets for a soft, natural-looking acrylic finish, and specialty Mylar nail designs for clients who want a jewel-like foil effect layered under clear gel.
